Naked in the lakes

Jo Haigh has always been one for 'outside of the box' ideas, and when a group of friends joined forces to support Jo Bell in her attempt to raise confidence and self-esteem in the women of Cumbria; The Naked in the Lakes Calendar (2016) was launched to raise money for "Give Us A Break 2010".

The charity's aim is to provide a day centre with activities and play equipment where children with disabilities can play and learn with local children, allowing families to socialise together and enabling safe spaces for friendships, confidence building and much needed rest, along with peer support for families.

Jo Bell launched Naked in the Lakes in order to empower women in the area and to raise money and awareness for a good cause.

The rest of the Always Another Way Team are pleased to say that Jo Haigh was the only one from our staff team taking her clothes off for charity, but it goes to show that with determination, drive and that 'get-up and go' mentality- anything is possible.

Can Zebras Climb Mountains?

During the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016, Always Another Way was only in the ideas phase.

So, as usual, Jo Haigh decided to undertake something a little strange... The aim was to raise awareness of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and fundraise for EDS UK so they can continue supporting those struggling with the condition.

Jo was diagnosed with EDS type III (hypermobility type) at the age of 21, and at 13 years old, Jo's daughter, Mya, was also diagnosed.

Ehlers Danlos Syndrome comes in many forms, yet little is known about the condition, especially in Cumbria; symptoms can include fatigue, headaches, hypermobile joints (joints that bend too far), dislocations, poor co-ordination, even bowel, stomach or heart problems, dental issues and flat arched feet. Splints, wheelchairs and devices are used to help manage the condition as there is no cure. Additional forms of Ehlers Danlos can include the vascular type which can cause life limiting and life threatening complications. EDS is often managed through daily adaptations, pacing, management strategies and intensive physiotherapy.

With the help and support of Jo's medical team and many months prep beforehand, Jo was given the ok to undertake the challenge and together with a group of brave volunteers (including some members of the Always Another Way team) they made plans  to climb Scafell Pike to raise awareness and funds for EDS UK.

In May 2016, for EDS Awareness month.... they actually pulled it off!

The base team, cheer-quad, first aiders, climbers and sandwich makers banded together and took on England's highest peak- Raising over £1,000 for EDS UK in the process!

Each climber has been touched by Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome in some way and with the help and support of THE SELLAFIELD BRANCH OF UNITE THE UNION, HERTEL, THE PARK HEAD INN and the tremendous amount of donations from all of you, we helped to make an invisible illness, visible. Creating much needed funds, knowledge and awareness throughout the journey.
